Shamanism is the world’s oldest spiritual practice, utilizing a set of practical techniques that have helped human beings to survive in all continents of the world since Paleolithic times despite having no contact with one another. Although academics heatedly debate the issue, in our view shamanism cannot really be considered a religion because it has no dogma, no organization, no sacred book, and no recognized leader nor does it have a single founder. While people of many religions practice shamanism, Catholics, Buddhists, Hindus, Taoists, and Jews, not all shamans are members of an organized religion.
Shamanism organically arose from ancient tribes as a response to the needs of the people. Shamans have always been recognized leaders in their communities healing the injured and sick, performing sacred ceremonies, singing, chanting and dancing, expressing themselves artistically, acting as the bridge between the living and the dead, and communicating with the spirits to receive knowledge and teachings of plants, animals, and the elements. In ancient Peru and China to name just a couple of developed civilizations, the emperors were always trained shamans.
Despite great efforts by the Inquisition and by the Nazis to exterminate shamans because they were seen as subversive, they are still alive and well today practicing their skills in many parts of the world. While not everyone can apprentice with a traditional shaman or become an official shaman today, it is still possible to practice the techniques of shamanism for gaining physical, mental, and spiritual health, accumulating vitality and power, and for self-development. In addition through shamanic practice one learns respect for the physical environment and learns to live more in balance with the earth and its creatures.
Advantages of seeing a shamanic practitioner
There are a number of advantages of seeing a shamanic practitioner in addition to seeking allopathic medical assistance. One is that the shamanic practitioner will include the energetic dimension as well the spiritual aspects of the situation. They are also able to call in their helping spirits to assist you in the healing so you get multiple helpers for the price of one. Another difference is that a shamanic practitioner is clear about the patients responsibility to take part in healing themselves. Their point of view is that no one can be healed unless they give their complete permission for the healing and take responsibility for their part in it.
